    Update on Masse redistricting application:

    • we have hired an environmental consulting company to review and document concerns with the Masse biophysical study, he will also speak on our behalf at the public hearing
    • we have contacted Alberta Transportation regarding concerns that we have with the traffic impact assessment and we will be reporting on this at the public hearing
    • we are speaking at the public hearing regarding the summer village concerns with this development
    • as council we are submitting a letter stating our concerns to LSAC Planning Dept

Now for your turn. I had planned to re-submit all of the letters that you (residents of our summer village) had sent in to LSAC Planning Department stating their concerns, but I just found out that the letters need to be re-sent in by the individual residents. I have a copy of what you sent me previously, I will send these out to each of you and request that you update them as required and submit them to the LSAC Planning Department at:

    Mr. Matthew Ferris
    Planning and Development Manager
    Lac Ste Anne County
    Box 219
    Sangudo, AB T0E 2A0
    Email: mferris@lsac.ca

    Ms. Danielle Woolnough
    Planning and Development Clerk
    Lac Ste Anne County
    Box 219
    Sangudo, AB T0E 2A0
    Email: dwoolnough@lsac.ca

These letters need to be submitted to LSAC by end of day Feb 24 (tomorrow), so this needs to be done right away. In your letter, please indicate that this is in reference to Bylaw #13-2016. If you did not provide me your letter initially or you do not receive a copy from me today, please re-submit your letters to LSAC Planning Department ASAP.

Update that I received on SnoMo Days:

Due to the warm weather and lack of snow we will not be holding our annual poker rally over the family day long weekend.

We thank all who offered to volunteer their time for this fundraiser, and hope that next year we will have all the local snow we could dream of!!

Please note, all SnoMo Days events in Alberta Beach including the sled drags are still a go over the family day weekend!!!

We have had a few questions from residents regarding the change to fire service providers and potential impact on home insurance. Here is more information on the change in fire services providers.

The Summer Village of Nakamun Park has changed fire protection service providers from Lac Ste Anne County to Onoway Regional Fire Services, with this change our primary fire hall will now be located in Onoway as opposed to Rich Valley which may have implications on the distance used by your insurance company to calculate your personal insurance fee. We encourage residents to do their due diligence and inform your insurance provider of this change; it might also be a good idea to do some “insurance shopping” and compare prices as the distance/range limits used by the various providers may also be different and this can affect how much you are paying for fire insurance.

We have made this change for the following reasons:
    • LSA County is reviewing where they will have fire halls located in the county, when we spoke to the county about whether they would keep the Rich Valley firehall open they could not commit to it; and
    • Onoway Regional Fire Services are provided by Northwest Fire and Rescue which has access to a broader range of equipment and more readily available staff and volunteers which we believe will help lower response times and increase service reliability.

With the new fire services provider, I forgot to state in the previous message that you still call 911 for fire emergencies, the call will be directed through to our new fire provider.

If you have other (non-emergency) questions the phone number for North West Fire and Rescue is 780-777-4688.

This is a reminder that we now have a new fire services provider; North West Fire and Rescue based out of Onoway is our new provider as of Jan 1, 2016. They will come out to meet the residents of our summer village and provide advice on fire safety early this coming summer.

Regarding the events planned for the 50th anniversary, all of the activities except the golf game are planned to be held at the summer village. The planning committee is arranging to have party tents set up and the majority of the activities will be held at Ted Macdonald Park.

Reminder – please go to the following link and let the committee know what activities you are interested in participating in:

Here is an update from the county planner on the Masse redistricting application.

Following the public hearing LSA County decided to request Masse to complete the following studies before they make a decision:

    • Environmental Impact Assessment
    • Biophysical Assessment
    • Transportation Impact Assessment

This is very good news for us, these assessments are extensive (and expensive) and if unbiased they will support our concerns regarding the environmental and traffic impact.

Update from the public hearing this morning:

We had a great turnout from residents around Nakamun Lake to oppose the development and thanks to all that stood up and spoke. There were 12 people that spoke against the redistricting application, including the summer village council which did a joint presentation.

Masse spoke in support of his application, the most interesting part of his presentation is that he has reduced the total number of planned sites from 205 to about 125 (since he recently learned that the would have to pave the road from his campground to the nearest highway if he had over 130 sites).

County council took all of this as information, they will now review it and make a decision on whether to approve or reject the redistricting application at some point in the future (no specific date provided). Stay tuned!

Here is an update from council on the RV Park rezoning.

We have had a very busy couple of weeks, this is a summary of what has been done to stop the RV park from being developed south of us:

    • Rallied local community residents to send letters in to county council. Great job everyone!
    • Sent a letter from Nakamun council to LSA county planners and council outlining our concerns based on research into the county Land Use Bylaws, Municipal Development Plan, Alberta Municipal Government Act, and our local summer village concerns
    • Contacted Alberta Municipal Affairs for advice on stopping this development and options if the bylaw is passed
    • Met with an Edmonton law firm which specializes in municipal law for advice on stopping this development (and we have engaged them on retainer)
    • Sent a letter to the Whitecourt-Lac Ste Anne MLA stating our concerns with this proposed redistricting
    • Arranged for a speaking time at the bylaw public hearing on Sept 1 to express our concerns to county council

Reminder – the bylaw public hearing is on Sept 1 (tomorrow) at 10:00am at the Council Chambers in Sangudo (#4928 Langston Street). We encourage all residents to come out and show your support for opposing this development.

We will not be submitting a petition to the county regarding the Masse property redistricting application. I have spoken to Alberta Municipal Affairs regarding us submitting a petition and have found out that it would not be admissible since we do not vote in Lac Ste Anne county.

I appreciate everyone volunteering to help distribute a petition, and I strongly encourage you to write letters to the county planners (if you have not already done so), plan to come to the public hearing on Sept 1 at Sangudo, and request to speak at the public hearing.
