Lots of activity around our village, time to send out an update.

    Branches/chipper
We have our new wood chipper and have started chipping branches from the summer village property. If you have branches that you would like to dispose of (under 3″ diameter, and only tree branches) you can drop them off at the SV maintenance shop in the area designated for branches. The SV manager will chip them and dispose of the chips. If you would like the chips for your own use, you are welcome to take any that are piled up at the SV maintenance shop waiting to be hauled away (self-serve, no delivery).

    Tree removal on SV property
When the SV manager clears trees out of SV property, any wood that is suitable for burning will be cut up and stacked in the ditch for residents to take. If you see wood stacked in the ditch, you are welcome to help yourself to it.

    Speed Bumps
The speed bumps are working great for slowing traffic down, but our new problem is with people driving in the ditch to avoid the speed bumps. Please do not do this, it only creates more work for our SV manager and is dangerous. People do not drive over sidewalks in the city to avoid speed bumps, why would you drive in the ditch in our community? Also, the SV manager has started placing large rocks in the ditches where people have been driving to stop this. Stay on the roads!

    Grass cutting in ditches
We have not been consistent with where the SV manager cuts grass in front of resident property up to the road, and it is incredibly time consuming for them to maintain this small section of grass. From now on, the SV manager will only be cutting grass in the ditches in front of municipal property (in front of green belts, park reserve, ditches along Masse property) and it is up to the landowner to maintain the grass in front of their property up to the road. This is also consistent with how residents maintain their property in Edmonton and is a small amount of extra work for local residents to cut the grass in their ditch.

    July 1 hot dog lunch
Time for free hot dogs! The summer village will be hosting a hot dog lunch at noon on Friday, July 1 at Ted MacDonald park for anyone that is interested, weather permitting. Come on out and visit with your neighbours. Also, for anyone that is interested in trying out fishing you do not need a fishing license on July 1.

    Summer Village Annual Meeting
We will be hosting our Summer Village annual meeting again this year, dates are to be determined. I will post an update to the web site when we figure out the date.

    Fire reports
With the extremely dry weather earlier this month and fire bans on, residents have been diligent about watching for outdoor fires while there is a ban on. Please be aware that during a normal fire ban, residents are allowed to have an outdoor fire if it is propane or natural gas (see http://www.albertafirebans.ca for the specific rules). If you call the fire department to report a resident who has an outdoor fire, the resident with the fire is liable for the fire department responding to the call if it is not a permitted fire (at a cost of $750 or more per trip by the fire department). If the resident has a fire that is permitted, then the person reporting the fire is liable for the cost of the fire department responding. Please be sure that an outdoor fire is not permitted before reporting it to the fire department.
