Rural Crime Watch Community – Join the CAPTURE program today!
As summer draws to a close and we get back into “off season” out at the lake, we encourage all property owners to consider ways of protecting their lots from theft and other property crime. Whether you’re a full time resident or a seasonal visitor to the community, we know that property crime tends to become an issue over the winter months. In addition to the perennial advice on protecting your property (enhanced lighting, locking doors and window, hiding valuable assets out of site, installing home security systems etc.) we are also reminding residents of the RCMP’s CAPTURE initiative.
CAPUTRE (Community Assisted Policing Through Use of Recorded Evidence) is a voluntary security camera registration program facilitated through the RCMP. Through this program, a list of neighbourhood cameras is maintained on the record, along with the contact information for those property owners. At no time will the RCMP or any other agency have free access to the registered cameras, but rather in the event of a reported crime, this registry will allow the RCMP to expedite their investigation by contacting anyone in the impacted neighbourhood who has a camera to request relevant surveillance footage directly and more quickly. Without this program, Officers must start their investigation with door knocking to gather this same information, and often by the time canvassing door-to-door is complete important footage can be lost (for example, if a camera’s stored memory is only a few hours or a few days).
If you do not have a security camera on your property, we do encourage you to consider installing one. The village is investigating options for same as part of the Shop Renovation project, but the more coverage in the community the better. If you have a camera already, or are considering installing one, please also consider registering with the CAPTURE program.
