As I am sure is the case with many people, I was aware that the Family and Community Support Services program existed but was not familiar with it’s actual purpose. I had always thought that it was focused on helping troubled or distressed families.
I am now a member of the FCSS Board and in our January meeting I was surprised to find that the program is actually focused on helping communities deliver social services that “promote and enhance well being among individuals, families, and communities”. This approach helps avoid social problems rather than treat them.
In our meeting we approved grants totaling $23,312 for 11 applications that cover a wide range of activities and groups including:
- Assisting the Scouts program
- Family drive in movie night
- Building birdhouses
- Helping the darts club
- etc.
If you have an idea for a community activity or group that could benefit from the FCSS grants, please contact me at mark.miller@svnakamun.com and I can help you with the grant process. For more information about FCSS, please go to:
