We have had a few occurrences of deer showing up dead in yards in our village, so I called Alberta Fish and Game to find out what the cause is. The wildlife officer informed me that the primary cause of deer dying around a village like ours is that people think they are doing the deer a favour by feeding them but the bird seed, oats, hay, and other various feeds that are left out cannot be digested by the deer so they end up starving with full stomachs. This then brings the coyotes in which makes a bad problem much worse.
So – bottom line, please do not feed the deer. The best thing for them is to forage out in farmers fields and stay away from the village where there is no food for them to eat. Also, please pass this message on to your neighbours and if you see someone leaving feed out for the deer print a copy of this message for them.
