HANDY REFERENCE MATERIALS FOR MUNICIPAL COUNCILLORS & ELECTORS

Participating in the electoral process is important, whether you let your name stand as a candidate or simply make time to cast your ballot, navigating the everchanging election landscape can be challenging – especially as the primary regulations speak to both general provisions and special considerations afforded to summer villages. In this section, we will share important election material and resources for candidates and electors to help them through the process.

Government of Alberta – Municipal Election Website – This is a great go-to reference for all election related material and enquiries, including links to municipal advisers and ministry staff. Go to: https://www.alberta.ca/municipal-elections-overview for more info!

Local Authorities Election Act (click to open) – This is the principle framework for regulating municipal elections in Alberta. While many provisions are universal to all local authorities in the province, Section 12 highlights some special considerations granted to summer villages (including Nakamun Park) relating to how and when we hold elections/byelections, and eligibility for candidates and electors.

Municipal Government Act (click to open) – This is the principle framework for governing municipalities in the Province of Alberta. Any prospective candidate should take care to review the Act as part of their election to-dos. Elected officials are required to take training shortly after their election, and much of that education is focused on knowing and apply the rules and regulation set out in the MGA.

A Candidate’s Guide: Running for Municipal Office (click to open) – This resource was development by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in the Government of Alberta. Although the most current iteration (from 2020) has a few peculiarities related to the unique COVID climate of that time, this resource document remains a great overview to the process of elections in Alberta and the roles and responsibilities of elected officials during their term in office. Anyone interested in running for office should take some time to go over this document.

Roles and Responsibilities of Municipal Councillors (click to open) –  Get a better feel for what the job of municipal councillor involves – check out this link for more information: https://www.alberta.ca/roles-and-responsibilities-of-municipal-officials

What Every Councillor Needs to Know: A Council Members Handbook (click to open) – Another great resource developed by the government of Alberta to help elected officials navigate their way through local authority management of governance.
