I went on the lake tonight with my snowmobile to drill holes and measure the ice thickness and discovered that while the ice seems to be fairly thick, there is also about a one foot layer of water on top of the ice that is extremely dangerous to get into. After significant amounts of effort trying to get my snowmobile unstuck from all of the slush with water going over the top of my boots, I finally got off the ice and back home to dry out. The water starts almost right at the shore in some areas.
Please heed my warning and stay off of the ice, including walking on it.
